BEGIN #487: Not a good week for Little Donnie.  He finds himself mired in double-deep doo-doo. Donnie’s pile keeps getting deeper and harder to ignore.

Because of earlier signals, no one was surprised when the DA in Fulton County Georgia (Atlanta area) indicted Trump and a bunch of conspirators under a Georgia racketeering statute, a version of the Federal statute known as RICO. Many of the charges had been discussed previously and many of the named co-conspirators – Giuliani, Powell, Eastman, Clark, Meadows, and a couple of others – were lawyers, all of whom are at risk of losing their license. Others indicted were high-profile associates involved in the effort to overthrow the 2020 election.

What was the surprise and what I think is helpful to frame in terms of the effect on US Revolution V, is how the indictment laid out criminal activity in great detail and in chronological order.

The breadth and depth of the evidence refute any argument about Trump’s 1^st Amendment rights being attacked or that the efforts to overturn the results were nothing more than a legitimate Trump administration inquiry to ensure election integrity.

The Fulton County District Attorney, Fani Willis, makes an incredibly strong case that maybe can best be described as a mafia-like effort by Trump and the gang to overthrow the election and overthrow the government.

Even if the talking heads on Fox and the Trump blowhards claim otherwise, the facts supporting the charges in the indictment indicate an array of crimes in Georgia and other states.  All this activity will be admitted as evidence under the RICO act and may be presented during a televised trial. As such, it is going to be extremely difficult for all but the most brainwashed Republicans to justify voting for Trump.

Another oft-discussed point, but one worth repeating, is none of the convictions in Georgia is subject to a pardon by Trump or any other president. I am unclear of the process for the governor of Georgia to pardon a criminal, but it may not be as sweeping as the US president’s.  Thus, most likely some or all the defendants who do not cut a very good plea deal will get fitted for an orange jumpsuit.

The details of the case in Georgia, and the details of the 01/06-case in DC will provide many Americans political cover to begin returning to traditional Republican positions.  Such a return will help start the healing process. Unfortunately, the Trump brainwashed diehards are unlikely to give up so the US could well see an increase in violence in the early stages of the healing process. 

The uptick in political violence could be similar to what the US experienced in the 1960s with several high-profile assassinations. Nonetheless, I am more hopeful about the country coming together than I’ve been in probably 10 years.  Isn’t it always darkest before dawn?  The sooner we can come together the better.  We need to seriously begin addressing climate change.

BEGIN #486: I’m not the first person to promote the idea of having cameras in the courtroom during Trump’s trial in DC.  Having cameras with sound will allow the public to hear the same testimony, and allow the public to view the same evidence as the jurors.

While some people will end up disagreeing with the jury’s verdict, whether guilty or not guilty, cameras will allow the public to see democracy in action. Cameras also will help mitigate the biased interpretation of the “talking heads” on cable, especially Fox, which claims the case is about denying free speech and not about trying to overturn the results of an election.

A simple change in the federal court procedures would be a major step forward to reducing potential violence following a verdict, especially a guilty verdict. January 6 was a violent attempt to overthrow democracy. Without cameras in the courtroom, the violence could be more widespread and much more intense.

SCOTUS Chief Justice Roberts needs to lead the charge to change the procedures in federal court to allow cameras with sound, as do many state courts. Changing the procedures should be welcomed by all citizens. END #486
