Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1. Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US Entry #476 was the most recent “sense check.”
BEGIN ENTRY #481: What a week! Jack Smith, special counsel appointed by Attorney General Garland, issued a 37-count indictment against former President Trump and another indictment against Trump’s former aide.
The charges were all serious, but the main charges were violation of the Espionage Act of 1917. Potential maximum sentence is 400+ years.
The case appears to be incredibly strong. The language of the filings was straightforward and worded such that the general public could understand. The public disclosure of the filing included a series of photographs of evidence taken by Trump employees.
Of course, true to form, Trump claimed the indictment was a witch hunt, a demonstration of weaponization of the government, and bias by the DOJ. Then, within two days, he was back on the campaign trail, telling supporters that this indictment is the “final battle” and all Democrats are really communists. I guess Democrats have been promoted from being mere socialist to now evil communists.
Clearly, Trump has joined the loony-bird society. Trump’s craziness didn’t seem to bother Republicans, especially virtually every Republican in Congress, save Mitt Romney and a few others, who rallied to support Trump even before reading the detailed indictment. Such good lawyers, these Republicans.
Tuesday June 13, 2023 is the arraignment in Miami. Given the evidence presented so far, by almost any standard, Trump is a threat to national security and should be locked up while awaiting trial. But that’s highly unlikely.
The second of the three threats is climate change. Oh, you know, a few fires in Canada – actually huge fires – blanketed the northern East Coast of the US in smoke. Air quality in New York City registered beyond “unhealthy” and registered as “hazardous.”
These type forest fires have been predicted by climate scientists for some years. Do science and evidence matter to Republicans? Of course not. Most Republicans continue to deny climate change as a near-term threat with Republicans claiming we need “real evidence” to be presented before any action should be taken.
Well, deniers, if you don’t believe scientists, then what about believing business people? Insurance companies in California and those deep-red states of Florida and Louisiana have stopped writing homeowners insurance. Why? Their reason – because of huge financial losses associated with fires and hurricanes. Residences of other states will likely experience similar problems.
Republicans if you can’t believe your business buddies about climate change, who can you believe? And wait until your summer house in Virginia or on the barrier islands of North Carolina is no longer insurable.
The third threat, or at least, perceived threat, is artificial intelligence, aka “AI.” We’ve all seen a steady stream of headlines about AI, including AI leading to human extinction.
All right, everyone, let’s just calm down a bit. AI can be a two-edge sword. The real threat, just like the real threat of a nuclear bomb, is the person controlling it. For AI, the threat is who has control over the program boundaries in which AI can operate.
Relinquishing control over the boundaries of AI programs – that is allowing the program to make decisions – may have disastrous consequences. That is the real threat. Further, like the consequences of making AR-15’s and other assault weapons readily available, the more people who have access to sophisticated AI programs, the more likely the potential for disaster. As we have seen repeatedly with Trump, and even more so after Smith’s indictment, some people cannot be trusted with critical decision making.
The other edge of the two-edge AI sword is positive – how AI can make people more productive, and reduce some of life‘s frustrations. AI can be a great partner when used properly. More on AI in the coming weeks.
As far as the triple threat and the 5th US Revolution (Revenge Revolution), the triple threat provides more reason to believe a Revenge Revolution is inevitable. Trump, aside, the threats of AI, and especially climate change, may cause the public, most notably those under age 30, to demand change. Given the backward thinking of Republicans, the only way the legislative change will occur is through a revolt. END ENTRY #481
