Welcome to a discussion about the 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, click “About the Author” tab.  Periodically I write a “sense check” about the status of the Revolution. The previous “sense check” was ENTRY #519. Yes, we are currently embroiled in the “Revenge Revolution.”

BEGIN ENTRY #526: Since the inauguration of Trump as POTUS 47 in January 2025, there has been increased interest in measuring the intelligence of US presidents.

During the same period, there has been even more interest, especially among the general public, wanting to learn about AI, artificial intelligence. Much of the interest has centered on: (i) exactly what AI is; (ii) can AI be superior to human intelligence?

Interestingly, during the first Trump administration, a group of scientists began exploring both issues. That study continued through the Biden administration.

In a recent paper, the scientists published their findings. The first president studied was Trump. When asked why Trump was selected, the scientists indicated there was a large database of public information about Trump prior to his initial candidacy and significantly more data available during his term as POTUS 45.

The title of this particular study was “The Identification of Intelligence of Trump.”  As is the norm inside the Beltway when referring to offices, agencies, and other activities, the study was assigned an acronym.  Much like POTUS, for president of the United States, or SCOTUS, for Supreme Court of the United States, the study ”Identifying the Intelligence of Trump” was assigned the acronym “IDIOT.”

The authors concluded that any intelligence Trump currently possesses is artificial. Since no medical records for Trump have been released, the scientists where uncertain exactly how Trump’s artificial intelligence was being received and processed.

When preliminary copies of the report were circulated among cabinet members, HHS secretary, RFK Jr, immediately claimed that there must have been a computer chip secretly inserted in the COVID vaccine that Trump received. Kristi Nome, Homeland Security secretary, claimed an illegal immigrant working surreptitiously in the White House kitchen must have planted a computer chip in the president’s frequently served double-bacon cheeseburgers.

Pam Bondi, Attorney General joined with Marco Rubio, secretary of state, to emphasize they intended to interrogate every person in the United States who did not vote for Trump for leads on how Trump is receiving his artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, when briefed on the report, Trump held a press conference exclaiming delight that he was the first president studied for intelligence and therefore, he must be the smartest.  He also proclaimed that he would sign an Executive Order mandating that he alone, among all the presidents, could claim the title of IDIOT.

Scientists involved with the study and others in the AI field were dismayed at the setback for AI. Most everyone involved thought the sophistication of AI had progressed far beyond what intelligence has been demonstrated by Trump. END ENTRY #526

#525: SCOTUS Hocus-Pocus

14 Wednesday May 2025

Welcome to a discussion about the 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, click “About the Author” tab.  Periodically I write a “sense check” about the status of the Revolution. The previous “sense check” was ENTRY #519. Yes, we are currently embroiled in the “Revenge Revolution.”

BEGIN ENTRY #525: Some decisions by SCOTUS make you wonder if a few justices need to visit a proctologist to have their head relocated to the correct part of their anatomy. Several examples of their legal trickery over the last decade or so.

  1. Citizens’ United (2010) ruled that restricting the amount of campaign donations by corporations and other organizations violated First Amendment rights. The result has been considerable amounts of “dark money” flowing into elections. The consequences of the decision were not hard to imagine, yet SCOTUS ruled so anyway.
  2. Dobbs decision, which essentially banned Federal law allowing abortions. Dobbs decision stated abortion laws should be enacted by individual states. What has emerged? An obvious byzantine set of state laws. As if the SCOTUS illogic were not enough, the case was taken by SCOTUS even though the plaintiffs had no standing. The justification for the suit was based on a hypothetical situation rather than actual events. More SCOTUS trickery.
  3. Trump vs United States (2024) where SCOTUS ruled presidents have absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within their exclusive constitutional authority and presumptive immunity for all official acts. However, the ruling does not grant immunity for unofficial acts. Gee, justices, really hard to understand what the consequences of that decision might be.

The most recent SCOTUS hocus-pocus, or “where is your head?” decision, was a ruling made without any oral arguments, and no evidence presented by the Trump administration supporting their claims.

As the Trump administration is prone to do, they filed an emergency appeal to overturn a lower court’s ruling prohibiting implementation of the administration’s proposed actions.  How did SCOTUS respond? Ever mindful of how the Trump administration has strictly adhered to all laws, SCOTUS bowed to the self-proclaimed orange king and issued a ruling that effectively allows Trump, as commander-in-chief, to ban transgender people from military service.

The ruling deferred to Trump‘s authority as commander-in-chief to ban transgender personnel in the military, regardless of the person’s rank, years of service, and/or history of performance. Trump order stated all known transgender service personnel be dishonorably discharged, which, in turns, makes the person ineligible for any potential pension.

One person affected is a pilot with 19+ years of service and 50+ combat missions. The military has invested $20+ million in training the pilot. But in Trump world, expertise and experience do not matter. If the king, who never served one day in the military, doesn’t like you, then “you’re fired!” A dishonorable discharge and no pension despite your service record. So much for supporting duty, honor, country.

Aside from the lack of evidence by the Trump administration that transgender personnel have underperformed or transgender personnel negatively affect morale of the unit, out they go. Where this leads is again not hard to predict.  What’s equally disturbing, I have not heard the likely consequences discussed in the media. And, as usual, Republicans in the House and Senate remain silent, shaking in their booties.

What’s the risk of the SCOTUS decision to allow the president to basically decide who can serve in the military?  Given Trump’s demonstrated proclivity for stretching every ruling to the limit, and then often ignoring the law, it is not hard to imagine Trump, or his Secretary of Defense lackey, will declare that those considered unfit for military service now include blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Asians, etc. Anyone who is not a religious fundamentalist with western European heritage is not fit to serve.

The SCOTUS ruling does not prevent transgender personnel dishonorably discharged from suing to get their jobs back.  Duh, SCOTUS, did you think through this decision? How do those discharged get their jobs back and/or retain their pension rights?

While the courts are technically available to those personnel, what is the cost and what are the consequences of the time lag between filing a suit and the eventual outcome? Law firms which have not capitulated and decided to stand up to Trump are already overloaded with pro bono work trying to help many high profile, highly educated people arbitrarily discharged or dismissed by the DOGE boys.

The pilot is high profile and might be an exception and probably could get pro bono representation from a top-notch law firm. But what about the other personnel? What is the staff sergeant going to do? If the personnel are able to sue, the Federal government will appeal any unfavorable ruling all the way to SCOTUS. Even with a favorable SCOTUS decision, the time lag will be ~3 years. The plaintiff will have taken another job, and the former military unit moved on. Those discharged have few real options for restitution.

What’s the solution to a SCOTUS that has repeatedly been unable to consider consequences of their decisions?  Some of the likely consequences are so basic you’d think that even Thomas and Alito would be concerned about the decision. But apparently not.

The solution is the same that’s required to stop Trump‘s effort to destroy democracy and form a dictatorship. The solution is a revolution, and one that more and more seems likely to become a shooting revolution with possible assassinations of Trump and key enablers. SCOTUS’ ineptness aside, the real cause is Trump.

If you think such events are unlikely, consider all the highly trained military like personnel who have been terminated and are extremely upset. People with military combat training, and especially those having served in special forces, know how to circumvent many “protections” surrounding the president and key agency personnel. Another option is a squadron of drones that attack during one of the president’s frequent golf games.

Want more ammunition, as it were, about how alienated groups might take revenge? SCOTUS agreed to hear arguments this term about whether the 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone born in the US. Trump, the Constitutional scholar, says the 14th Amendment does not apply to non-citizen mothers. Mmm, does that mean a couple of Trump’s children are not US citizens since the mother was not a citizen when they were born?  Stay tuned.

By the way, have a nice day, Mrs. Lincoln. Hope you enjoyed the play.   END #525

BEGIN ENTRY #523: AI has gotten a lot of ink in the past few years. Some people tout AI as the next major advancement in civilization, while others claim AI will accelerate the decline of civilization.  So, who’s right?

At this point, we don’t know. However, it seems possible that AI could reduce man’s (generic “man”) ability to think and ability to determine what is a reasonable solution to a problem. Yes, AI can help solve many problems. AI is an excellent tool for getting answers to questions.

The dilemma is whether or not the person asking AI for the answers needs to have a reasonably good understanding of the topic AI is being asked to address. Without that understanding, how does one know if the response is reasonable or AI is “hallucinating” – i.e., making up the answer.

An example: in preparing for this blog entry, I asked AI the following “Draft a 2-page document describing how unreasonably high tariffs can affect the economy.” (Hint: the more precise the instructions to AI, the more likely you’ll get a reasonable response.)

AI’s response, which was provided in seconds, was, in my view, an excellent summary of the possible impact of unreasonably high tariffs. (Click link for AI response.)

Having studied economics and spent many years applying economics to guide critical business decisions helped provide me with a perspective to assess the credibility of the AI response. Without that education and experience, I would not have known to what extent the response was reasonable, or to what extent AI was hallucinating, which it does periodically.

The answer to the question, “Is AI a friend or foe?” will be greatly influenced by the extent to which society begins to substitute AI for basic learning. We are already experiencing some decline in the ability of the population to reason. In my view, that decline has been accelerated, in part, by the shift toward more emphasis on STEM (Science. Technology, Engineering, Math) education and less emphasis on the liberal arts. Much content of STEM is binary – yes/no, right/wrong.

However, the real world and real relationships are not so clear cut. Depending upon the topic, the “gray area“ between the binary poles can be substantial. Understanding how to operate in the gray area is critical for building relationships, and for the continued survival of civilization.

Interestingly, understanding how to operate effectively in the gray area is also critical for many STEM situations. Engineering solutions tend to focus on a defined area or application. Yet, almost always the application operates in a much larger, more complex environment.

While the teaching of “systems engineering” begins to address the influence of other variables in that environment, to fully apply the benefits of systems engineering, engineers themselves need to be able to identify likely variables in the environment and their influence on the outcome.

Where does that broader perspective of a problem come from? Learning what is taught in the liberal arts.  Critical thinking comes from understanding interactions that are often based on “fuzzy” variables and “squishy” assumptions. Behaviors within an environment are not binary.

Without systems thinking, problems tend to be viewed as binary, which leads to a zero-sum game. In a binary, zero-sum game world, if one side wins, the other side must lose. In a binary world there is no such thing as “a rising tide lifts all boats.”  In a binary world, a win-win situation is not possible.

While more entries on AI are to come, a key point is if the “organization in charge” – company, political party, group, etc. – views the world with a binary, zero-sum mentality, then all decisions are based on someone, or some group always having to win and someone having to lose.  Such an attitude disenfranchises groups and inevitably leads to a revolution.

BEGIN ENTRY #522: Scene: you’ve decided that parts of your house need updating. The HVAC system seems a bit inefficient and probably should be updated. The roof might need a few repairs to prevent future leaks.

You are not sure what else might need to be improved. So, to help you call in someone who claims to be an expert in revamping systems that are supposedly outdated or could use some preventive maintenance. You and the self-proclaimed expert agree on a start date, and the expert arrives at the scheduled time.

The expert is accompanied by a team of people you have never met. Most are young and don’t look to have the credentials of someone in the skilled trades needed for the proposed scope of work.  You watch inquisitively as the work team unloads from the truck a set of tools of destruction – sledgehammers, chainsaw-like devices, crowbars, etc. – but no tools that you expected to be used for repairing and preventive maintenance.

The expert tells the team to “Have at it,“ and you watch in horror as the team immediately begins destroying structural components of your house. As the expert gets ready to leave, you ask, “What’s going on here?“

Expert replies, “We’re going to make your house better.“ You reply, “But where are the plans? How do I know what you’re going to do? It looks as if you’re trying to tear the house down, not make improvements.“

“Don’t be concerned,” the alleged expert says, “we’ll rebuild everything later. But first we must tear up and tear out everything we don’t like. Step aside while the team makes your house more efficient with our sledgehammers and chainsaws.”

And so goes the approach Trump and the Muskovites are taking to “increase the efficiency” of your Federal government. The mantra of the Trump/Muskovites group has been, “Don’t plan, just break, then blame someone else and walk away.”

For those unfamiliar with Trump’s career, he has taken this same approach to virtually every major real estate project. The Trump Tower on 5th Avenue, for example, replaced one of the most beautiful buildings in midtown Manhattan. Do you think he tried to save any of the building and incorporate into Trump Tower? Of course not. Trump’s approach — demolish the building and then send the beautiful stonework to the dump. Fortunately, some of the stonework was saved thanks to a scrap dealer, but with no support from Trump.

As far as efficiency, virtually everyone agrees that most organizations, public and private, have some areas where efficiency could be improved. However, anyone with an ounce of brains knows that breaking or destroying something is relatively easy — give me a sledgehammer and chainsaw.  What takes longer and some serious thought is how to make an organization more efficient while maintaining its integrity, and keeping it running relatively smoothy during the transition.

What Trump and Musk are doing to the Federal government might seem exciting to some MAGAts. But their approach to increasing efficiency is back asswards. Breaking something takes no brains. Further, breaking often has serious consequences that are hard to reverse. When a Federal agency is eviscerated, the result can increase the risk to national security.

“Oops, you mean, we just fired all the key people who guard the US’ nuclear weapons? And oops, you mean, we also deleted all their contact information? And, oops, since they all had top-secret clearances, the contact information isn’t in other databases?” (Yes, it is true.) How did Trump and Musk respond to such an egregious and inexcusable error? Ho hum. “DOD and the public, you need to get over it.  Everyone makes a minor mistake now and then.”

Whether or not you’re a Trump supporter, Trump and Musk have demonstrated they are incapable of managing the most basic tasks in government. Yes, managing an operation in the Federal government is far more complicated than operating a small family-owned real estate business or being a TV personality.

Managing an operation in the Federal in government is not like being some tech guru who thinks software solves all problems.

If you still are happy with what Trump and Musk are doing, wait until your life is seriously disrupted by a non-functioning Federal agency that was effectively destroyed by the Trump regime. In the meantime, you’ll soon be reminded each day of the consequences of another “dumb-and-dumber” strategy – stiff virtually across-the-board tariffs for our best trading partners. Other than a select few examples, tariffs do not work, generate inflation and can lead to a severe recession and even Depression.

More on tariffs soon. In the meantime, take a look at the consequences of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. END ENTRY #522

#517. More Basic Education Needed to Avoid Electing a TOT as President

26 Thursday Dec 2024

Welcome to a discussion about the 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, click “About the Author” tab.  Periodically I write a “sense check” about the status of the Revolution, one of which seems to occur about every 50 years in the US.

The previous “sense check” was ENTRY #500. Much has happened since Entry #500 to reinforce my belief we are currently embroiled in US Revolution 5, which I’ve labeled the “Revenge Revolution.”

BEGIN ENTRY #517: The American voting public is stupid. Such a statement might seem harsh and elitist. And maybe so.  But how else does one explain electing a fraudster, convicted felon, serial liar with no known positive attributes to become president, again?

Besides, insults seem to be the only type of statements MAGAts understand. Clearly, logic and taking the high road were ineffective approaches.

I’ll cut some slack to those who voted for Trump the first time, but not the second. All the negative attributes of Trump cautioned about before the 2016 election, and widely documented in an array of publications over the years, were proved correct during the four years of his administration. Those negative attributes were reinforced during the Biden administration and even more apparent during the campaign against Kamala Harris.

Where was the much of the voting public during the last eight years? Apparently, being brainwashed even more by Fox Misinformation Network. (Just in case you missed it, Fox agreed in April 2023 to pay Dominion Voting Systems $785 million to settle a defamation suit stemming from Fox promoting fraudulent information about Dominion’s voting machines in the 2020 election.)

OK, so you voted for Trump in 2024 because you were frustrated with some of the Biden administration policies, or maybe you couldn’t stand the idea of a black woman as president.  The policies that were so frustrating?  The ones that resulted in strong economic growth, the lowest unemployment rate in more than 50 years, a record high for the stock market, and legislation  to repair and expand infrastructure.

Recall all the “infrastructure” programs under Trump that got enacted?  You don’t recall any?  At least you have some memory left because there were none, even though Trump controlled both houses of Congress for part of his term and had regular “infrastructure” sessions.

But, no, none of the accomplishments of the Biden/Harris administration mattered.  MAGAts were focused on real issues, like Biden administration’s commitment to give some rights to a tiny percentage of the population who’s transgender.  MAGAts know transgenders are not real people, so why give them rights?

MAGAts, why don’t you put on your big boy pants and focus on issues that matter.  Regardless of your political views, every administration is going to implement some policies you disagree with. What should be criteria for evaluating is whether the policies benefit the citizenry of the country and not a select group of politicians, or say the very wealthy, like Trump’s tax cuts did.

We all need to keep in mind citizens have equal protection under the law. While one might not agree with another’s personal behavior, as a society, we have laws to protect individual rights. Rights are defined by the Constitution.  Rights are not defined by some short-term president, some blowhard politician or some religious group.

In the Bill of Rights – notice the name – Amendment I of the US Constitution reads as follows, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press, or the right of the people peacefully to assemble, and to petition the government for the redress of grievances.”  That’s the entire First Amendment.

For those who slept through American History class from elementary school through high school, the pilgrims left England and came to America to be able to establish and enjoy freedom of religion. The US was not founded based on a single religion.

For those who claim because many of the basic laws in the US are consistent with the 10 Commandments, the US was therefore founded on Christianity.  If you’re in that group, please read the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy not in the Trump bible but as written in the Torah. If one wants to pick a religion as the foundation for the US, the logical choice would be Judaism and not Christianity.

Where is the lesson from this discussion? Clearly more educated voters would make better choices when selecting candidates for office. My question to those who voted for Trump, especially a second time, “Do you really understand who Trump is and what he wants to do?”  “Are you prepared for the chaos that will occur under his new administration?”

Yes, most everyone agrees there are parts of the government that could be improved. But, improvements are needed in most organizations, relationships, and even structures. Because your house needs a few repairs, do you destroy it? Destroying something is always easier than fixing it.  Once destroyed, rebuilding takes more time and effort than repairing and results in more disruption to normal operations.

What do we have with Trump and his incoming administration?  Conan the Barbarian on steroids.  Assume your bathroom faucet is leaking. You call a plumber named Trump.  Does Trump the plumber fix the leak in the faucet?  No, he tears down your house.

Funny, ha, ha it isn’t. Keep in mind Trump is not loyal to anyone.  He does not care if you voted for him.  You can quickly become a target and be on the receiving end of the viciousness of some of Trump’s policies.

What a small majority of the public has done is vote to assign responsibility for the welfare of the country and much of the world to someone with the maturity and intellect of a 6-year-old spoiled brat.  The MAGAts have elected a TOT to help determine everyone’s future.  The TOT is Trump the Orange Tyrant. END ENTRY #517

#516. Making American Education Great Again

28 Thursday Nov 2024

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, click “About the Author” tab.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US.

The previous “sense check” was ENTRY #500. Much has happened since Entry #500 to reinforce my belief we are currently embroiled in US Revolution 5, which I’ve labeled the “Revenge Revolution.”

BEGIN ENTRY #516: The gap between entries #515 and #516 was intentional, but longer than expected. A combination of waiting for the election results and another project that has essentially become full-time – and its pro bono, but a good cause.

Recent blog entries have focused on the value of education in improving economic well-being of different groups. The entries suggested the black community would do well to follow the lead of most every other ethnic group by emphasizing education for children.

After the 2024 presidential election, I’m convinced more than ever that the proper primary and secondary education is a key to economic well-being for all Americans. I’m also convinced that the education curriculum needs to revert to what was once a standard.

Based on the logic of how a large percentage of the population decided which presidential candidate to support in 2024, it is clear that America lacks a basic knowledge of history, civics, the law and other social sciences.

An unintended consequence of the effort to increase education in STEM courses – science, technology, engineering, mathematics – has been to eliminate subjects that help people learn how to think about societal issues.

Some anecdotal evidence from the election seems to point out how many people cannot connect two dots, let alone three dots. Examples:

Why did a surprisingly large percentage of blacks vote for Trump? An oft-cited response was “what have the Democrats done for me lately?”

Dot #1 – Trump does not like, nor has he supported blacks. If you have any doubts, check the list of “shithole” countries cited by Trump. Also check how Trump has repeatedly sided with and endorsed all-white ultranationalist groups.

Dot #2 – all of Trump’s proclaimed economic policies favor the wealthy. As a black, are you ready to experience major cuts in an array of social programs? And, are you ready to continue to support rulings from Trump-appointed judges to suppress voting?

Blacks were not alone in their strange voting logic. A large percentage of white seniors favored Trump.

For white seniors, do you think Trump will protect Social Security and Medicare? His cabinet nominees should not be a surprise to anyone who reads and just doesn’t get all their news from Fox.

OK, so older whites, particularly men, don’t like black women. But do you dislike a black woman so much that you’ll vote for a guy whose actions could potentially have a material negative impact on your economic well-being? The answer is “yes.”

The rationale cited by blacks, particularly men, and white seniors for voting for Trump defies logic 101. I believe it defies logic because too many people have no, or at best, have a very limited understanding of economics, history, civics, literature and other topics that enable one to think through a problem.

As a country, if we want to protect democracy and continue to increase economically, then we need to update the education curriculum to include the social sciences. People might claim that more emphasis on social sciences is elitist and even socialist.

If you’re in that camp, then I suggest you revisit the education curriculum in the era that Trump claims as America being “great.” As you review the courses, you’ll be surprised at what constituted a basic education for all students.

You might also be surprised at the array of “skilled trades” that were taught in high school. These students often were able to work in the trades immediately after high school. A high percentage of those jobs when “America was great” were in the…yikes!…union.

As we return to a basic core curriculum, we can adjust the content of the STEM subjects to address current challenges facing American industry. Doing so will help all future generations. All for now. END ENTRY #516

#515: Why Are Blacks Stuck at the Bottom of the Economic Ladder (Part 2)

29 Sunday Sep 2024

Posted by Jordan Abel in Societal Issues, Uncategorized

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, click “About the Author” tab.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. The previous “sense check” was ENTRY #500.

Preface: I do not know how many entries will address this topic.  Nor do I pretend to be an expert who will present a practical solution.  There have been numerous attempts to address the problem of why blacks seem stuck at the bottom of the economic ladder.  As is often the case when addressing a problem, particularly one that is complex, proposed solutions tend to focus more on symptoms rather than the cause.  Further, when trying to address a social problem, “political correctness” and/or political party affiliation tenda to interfere with an objective analysis of the problem and possible solutions.

Entry #514 closed with this paragraph: Why have blacks not made more progress and remain stuck at the bottom? Is it a lack of ambition? Is the cause a mentality that continues to believe white society owes black something for actions of slaveholders more than 6-7 generations ago?  While the statement might seem preposterous, can it at least partially be the cause? Anecdotal evidence might provide some clues.

Anecdotal evidence #1.  Since relocating to Charlotte more than 25 years ago, we’ve been exposed to a bit of the culture of what one might label as the “old south.”  When we first met long-time southerners, usually within a few minutes of beginning the conversation, we were asked questions along the lines of,  “What church do you belong to?” Soon thereafter came question #2, “Where are your people from?”

From a “Yankee’s” perspective, these questions seem designed to establish one’s credibility as a southerner.   In terms of church hierarchy, Southern Baptist churches seem to rank #1. (BTW, for many southerners, synagogues are somehow considered really churches that Jews happen to attend.)

As far as the “your people” question, I’ve never understood the meaning other than if you’re relatives were north of the Mason Dixon line, then you’re to be viewed with great suspicion.  The essence of these questions seems to be, “we are still fighting the Civil War and you Yankees are not welcome here.“  (Think I should quit wearing a sweatshirt with a picture General Sherman carrying a torch in one hand?}

If you think these questions are continuing today, a couple of weeks ago my regular golfing partner and I were teamed up with two gentlemen in their mid-60’s.  One was a Charlotte native who proceeded to tell me on about the 5th hole that all the Yankees who had relocated were ruining Charlotte.

How does the “old south” attitude affect the behavior of blacks?  I never considered what I’m about to write as legitimate until drafting this entry. Blacks still may consider themselves somewhat under the thumb of the white man.  Yes, I know that seems absurd after 160 years since slavery, but I can’t think of a better reason.  The attitude of “invisible slavery“ seems to lead to a desire for retribution.

Anecdotal evidence #2, pine straw.  If you live in parts of the south, and your neighborhood has an HOA with any kind of authority, pine straw becomes a regular lawn maintenance item. At least once per year, you hire someone to deliver, spread, and rake bales upon bales of pine straw.

After our lawn service guy went to prison for tax evasion, we would hire people who came through the neighborhood with a truck and a trailer filled with bales of pine straw. For several years, we relied on the same gentleman – black man from South Carolina – to replenish the pine straw. His work was passable, and seemed a bit expensive. Overall grade, C.

Then our neighbor hired a man from Central America to do some yardwork and shrub trimming. We hired him as well and based on job performance, asked if he could do pine straw.  “Yes.”  He did a much better job than the other gentleman, at half the price, and was available via text for other yard maintenance.

As in many neighborhoods, word of mouth is a highly credible source of information.  Now the Hispanic gentleman does lawn-maintenance work for a substantial portion of the neighborhood. After about three years of hard work, his equipment has gone from an old, rather beat up pick-up truck to two new trucks with trailers, and a couple more employees.

How about the original guy, the black man from South Carolina? He still comes by but complains about the Hispanic guy taking away his business. “He’s too aggressive and he doesn’t charge enough.”  But has the black man changed his business model or lowered his price?  No.  He just complains.

What do these anecdotes tell us?  While anecdotal evidence is not proof, such evidence is worth evaluating for underlying causes or trends that should be studied more.  The stories here and a number of other casual observations suggest there might be an attitude among blacks, or at least certain blacks, which has prevailed for many decades.

Attitudes, regardless of the cause, do not automatically change when laws are implemented or changed.  Attitudes evolve over time by a willingness of those affected to make a change.  For blacks, the model for changing being stuck at the bottom of the economic ladder could be one that has worked for every other immigrant group.

The model for change is to look ahead and encourage and support the entire family getting an education. Under this emphasis-on-education model, within a generation or two, the payoff for many immigrant families has been a substantial.  The payoff has been a major improvement in economic well-being.

Education does not necessarily imply only college but includes the skilled trades.  The model also discourages sustained welfare. The formula: education and hard work pay dividends.

Future entries will attempt to address:

• Busing.  Is busing helping or hurting blacks?  Is busing intensifying resistance within the broader community to support public education?

• Affirmative Action.  What is the underlying cause of the decline in black admissions to certain universities following the SCOTUS restrictions on affirmative action tell us?  Are blacks not as qualified and/or do they not put forth the effort to learn?

No doubt other issues will evolve as the series progresses. Stay tuned. END ENTRY #515

#514. Why Do Blacks Stay at the Bottom of the Economic Ladder? (Lesson #7)

Been a while since the post #513. Check the prediction in #513 about Trump finding an excuse to drop out before the election. Based on his performance during the 09/10/24 debate, the odds seem even more likely.

The next series of entries may be considered a bit controversial. My view is we, societal we, need to have a honest and open conversation about trying to solve important social issues.

One solution we will discuss in this series is whether to modify the national education policy to fall someplace between Brown v. Board and Plessy v. Furgeson (separate but equal)?  The idea of such a policy might seem outrageous and might seem even more out of place for a discussion about ideas to help save democracy.  However, if one delves a bit deeper into what is causing major rifts in our society and rifts between political parties, “social programs” are near the top of the pile.

Some housecleaning.  I do not know how many entries will address this topic.  Nor do I pretend to be an expert who will present a practical solution.  There have been numerous attempts to address the problem of why blacks seem stuck at the bottom of the economic ladder.  As is often the case when addressing a problem, particularly ones that are complex, proposed solutions tend to focus more on symptoms rather than the cause.  Further, when trying to address social problems, “political correctness” and/or political party affiliation tend to interfere with an objective analysis of the problem and possible solutions.

House cleaning is over.  Back to the issue.  For this conversation, “social programs” are defined as those designed to attempt to overcome a perceived wrong inflicted upon another segment of society.  What seems to cause the rifts between groups is not an attempt to provide aid for those temporarily in need.

The rift seems to evolve from social programs that are perceived to encourage recipients to remain on “welfare-like” program and/or to provide recipients with a seemingly unfair advantage.  Notice emphasis on “perception.”

Are there data that could provide a degree of validity to various perceptions that seem to cause the rifts?   For many years I have asked myself, “Why have a seemingly higher proportion of blacks remained at the bottom of the economic ladder?”

Obviously, there are pockets of the economy where blacks have excelled – sports and entertainment, for example.  I understand the NBA teams are facing a suit that, if successful,  would result in implementing a quota system for white players – just kidding.  And many blacks have become quite successful nationally – Barack Obama and Kamala Harris are but two internationally known politicians.

What about blacks as a whole in economic terms?  How have they fared over time?  Let’s look at the symptoms as a start.

Based on US Census data, in 2023 median income for blacks was about 70% of national median income.  In 1970, roughly two generations ago, median income for blacks was just over 61% of national median income.  Is that reasonable progress?

Compared to median income for whites, blacks’ median income increased from about 57% in 1970 to 63% of whites in 2023.  Compared to median income for Asians, blacks have remained at about 50% since 1982, the first year that median income for Asians was available.

As one looks at the data, the question remains, “Why does the growth in median income for blacks seem so slow?  What is causing the significant persistent gap in median income among blacks?“

160+ years have passed since the Emancipation Proclamation. Post WWII, starting with the integration of the military, followed by Brown v. Board of Education and then a plethora of laws in the mid-1960’s addressing inequities in voting rights, education, housing, employment, etc.  Still blacks have remained stuck at the bottom of the economic ladder.

During the past 160 years numerous other ethnic groups have entered the US.  Many of those groups have faced severe discrimination – Italians, Irish, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, etc.

Yet, for these other immigrant groups, despite being offered jobs with only a subsistence wage, within 2-3 generations, and sometimes less, the group as a whole started to move up the economic ladder.

Current immigrants of Hispanic origin face discrimination and challenges similar to previous immigrant groups. Further, Hispanics as a percent of US population have increased from ~7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2023.  Many of the newly arrived Hispanics find employment in lower-paying jobs.  Despite the bulge in the number of Hispanics with low-paying jobs, median income for Hispanics has remained at about 80-81% of national median income and 115+% of blacks.

Why have blacks not made more progress and remained stuck at the bottom? Is it a lack of ambition? Is the cause a mentality that continues to believe white society owes black something for actions of slaveholders more than 6-7 generations ago?  While the statement might seem preposterous, can it at least partially be the cause? In Entry #515 we’ll discuss whether anecdotal evidence might provide some clues. END ENTRY #514

#513. Trump Takes a Dump

BEGIN ENTRY #513: In the late 1960’s/early 1970’s, there was a weekly TV show titled “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.“ The show featured many tongue-in-cheek skits about a variety of topics.

One segment, a parody of recent news events was called “That Was the Week that Was.”  News events this past week, plus a few days, could have qualified unedited for the entire “That Was the Week that Was” segment.

Going into last week Trump had a very comfortable lead over Joe Biden to be president.  Then, in the middle of the British Open golf tournament, Biden posts on social media he is withdrawing and, a short time later, endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

Within a couple of days, the energy and momentum shifted to the Democrats and Trump was scrambling to generate any positive momentum.  The Republicans were like a football team that in the 3rd quarter loses a 30-point half-time lead.

Why did Trump take such a dump?  His worst nightmare became the quarterback of the other team.  Biden would have been a pushover, mostly because of age and a poor performance at the first presidential debate.  Then, Biden bows out and, voila, the new quarterback is a nemesis to Trump in every respect.  A black female, substantially younger, former prosecutor, and married to a Jew. All the categories Trump tries to trash.

The shift in momentum toward Harris and away from Trump has been breathtakingly fast. While  some political pundits claim Harris is still on her political honeymoon and the shift in momentum could be temporary like a sugar high, my view is the opposite.  Rather than momentum abating, momentum is going to intensify.

The difference between the candidates is startling.  Harris is articulate, under 60, and has a stellar record as a prosecutor and a senator. She carries little baggage and can take credit for many of the remarkable string of legislative achievements under the Biden administration, where she was VP.

Trump is now the oldest presidential candidate in history at 78, a convicted felon awaiting sentencing, has a $500 million (with interest) civil judgment outstanding and has been rated by a group of presidential historians as the worst president in US history.  Even worse than Andrew Johnson!

And from all indications, Trump is scared. He’s already coming up with lame excuses to avoid debating Harris. To anyone other than hardcore MAGAts, his speeches at rallies have become even more irrational.

At a rally of fundamentalist Christians, he stated that if he were elected, the fundamental Christians would never have to vote again.  He even repeated the implied “I’ll be a dictator for life” claim on Fox.  Laura Ingram gave him an easy out with a simple question, but Trump refused to back down.

A couple of days ago at a conference of black media personnel, Trump claimed Harris only recently decided she was black.  No, Donald. Try another claim. Harris only went to undergrad at Howard University, an HBCU, and pledged a sorority for black women.  Donald, how dumb can you get?

Mmm, thinking about this again, maybe Trump is right.  All these years Harris has been trying to hide her identity.  Her parents really aren’t who she claims.  The reality is she was born in Kenya and the secret sister of Barack Obama. (I’m sure a version of that fable will be promoted on right-wing media.)

Trump‘s VP selection, named JD Vance at least for now, is not helping the Trump campaign. Vance’s statements are so outlandish he almost makes Trump look rational.

Where does all this lead?  Independents and moderate Republicans now have an out from having to consider Trump.  After the Democratic convention, her campaign is likely to be more middle of the road, like Joe Biden.  The centrist approach will make it much easier for Independents and frustrated Republicans to at least vote for her in 2024.

My prediction? Trump gets crazier and crazier as the campaign goes on. Finally, a few weeks before the election, he acknowledges to himself that he cannot win.  His solution?  Step out of the race for “health reasons,” claiming his doctors won’t let him run – probably more than another bone spur.  Stepping down avoids the embarrassment of losing the popular vote three times and losing in a landslide to a black woman and former prosecutor.  Stay tuned. END ENTRY #513

#512. Thanks, Joe

BEGIN #512: Thanks, Joe, for stepping down. Painful? Yes. Bruised ego? Yes. Right thing for the country and for trying to save democracy? Yes.

While you will not be around to appreciate it, history will hold you in high regard. Your presidency accomplished an incredible amount under very trying circumstances. Managing a coordinated response to the pandemic, then leading the country back from recession to record employment…and yes, a record on Wall Street. A few bumps along the way but remarkable track record given the circumstances.

You put duty, honor, country ahead of self. May other candidates of both parties follow your lead. You are an honorable man. END #512
