Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. Entry #430 was the most recent “sense check.”

BEGIN ENTRY #460. This entry might seem like a variation of recent entries. Just hear me out. The issue is too important to discuss just once or twice. I think, without fear of exaggeration, that our democracy rests on addressing this issue satisfactorily.

Since starting the blog in late 2013, the purpose has been to discuss issues that might contribute to/diminish the likelihood of a 5th US revolution.  Blog topics have ranged from those of personal interest – the impact of macro and micro-economics, e.g. – to cultural issues – the impact of religion on attitudes toward government, e.g.

During the last nine years, what has been most surprising to me is how a large segment of the population has become swayed to believe in and enthusiastically support ideas that are completely bogus, and often 180° from reality.  One would like to believe that more education would help people avoid this seeming brainwashing. However, apparently not the case.

A substantial portion of those “believers,” – let’s assume 50% to minimize the error – is relatively well educated, including some with advanced degrees. Why are supposedly more knowledgeable people falling into the liars den?  Why are people who supposedly have more understanding of the process of critical thinking continuing to believe claims that are so outlandishly false that they would punish their children for saying something similarly false?

Who are these people? Do they have a certain profile?  Yes, most are white, descendants of western Europeans, and overwhelmingly Christian, especially fundamentalist, and virtually all Republicans.

The world according to Garp – growing ascension of radical protestants – is one where “My religion is the only answer. Government must be based on my religion. All education needs to be based on my religion. If you are not a believer in my religion, you must be punished.“

The religious right seems to support any candidate for political office who promotes their religion. The candidate can be corrupt, living in a way counter to the basic tenets of their religion, and even can be promoting that democracy be abolished. All those traits are OK as long as “my religious beliefs are forced on the population.“

Based on demonstrated behavior, most Republicans in 2022 would seem to support even Charlie Manson for president, as long as Charlie promised to continue to change laws and pack the courts to ensure that fundamentalist Christian beliefs are implemented.

One might argue that the example of supporting Charlie Manson is too extreme. However, if you think too extreme, I ask you to consider why Republicans enthusiastically support Trump, who has a long history of lying and corruption, over the FBI, the whitest and most conservative agency in the federal government.  In addition, every director of the FBI under every administration, Republican and Democratic, has been a well-established Republican.  (Read the last sentence again.)

Why do Republicans enthusiastically support Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lindsay Graham, Mark Meadows, Ron DeSantis and a host of known liars and then chastise Liz Cheney for having the temerity to uphold her oath to Constitution?  Support the US Constitution rather than Trump?  How dare she!

Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated they would rather flush logic down the toilet and continue to support the religious cult. When cults conquer logic, the only solution to restore logic, and the solution is never pretty, is to squash the cult. END ENTRY #460.

#459. Are Republicans Really that Stupid or Just Brainwashed?

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. Entry #430 was the most recent “sense check.”

BEGIN ENTRY #459: Let’s see, this past week the FBI raided Trump’s club/residence in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, and recovered at least 11 boxes of material that were illegally transferred from government property. Earlier in 2022, Trump returned to the government 15 boxes of material that had been illegally transferred from the White House. The return of the material occurred only after an injunction forcing Trump to do. One of Trump’s lawyers signed a letter indicating the 15 boxes represented all information that needed to be returned. Oops.

Some of the boxes, how many to be determined, contained files marked “Confidential,” “Top-Secret” and “TS-SCI,” which indicates files are only to be viewed in a preestablished security location.

Without any evidence, Trump claimed all the information held at Mar-a-Lago had been “declassified.“ As a result, he had a right to possess. Some Trump staffers and supporters claimed Trump had a standing order to “automatically declassify any documents that left the White House.“

I hate to inform Trump and supporters but there is a procedure for declassifying documents.  Part of that procedure includes “restamping” each page of the document as “Declassified” and providing other documentation.  In typical Trump fashion, no support was provided for the claim that all documents were declassified.

In parallel, Trump and supporters blamed Attorney General Garland and the FBI, which is headed by a Trump appointee, of either continuing the long-standing “witch hunt” against Trump or setting up the raid to keep Trump from running for office again. In either case, the AG, DOJ and FBI are all corrupt and according to some Trump supporters, should be tried for treason.

Other Trump supporters, Jim Jordon (R-OH) being one, asked, “What’s the big deal about Trump having the documents? All the documents were declassified.“ Jimmy you’re such a hypocrite and a liar to boot.

The radical right began to spout that anyone connected with the raid – the judge who signed the order, the FBI agents who conducted the search, and AG Garland, who personally signed off on the raid – should be assassinated.

Where were Republican members of the US House and Senate once the raid became known? Spineless, of course, save Liz Cheney and a couple of others. The so-called leaders of the country were afraid of the great wizard of Mar-a-Lago.  Some spineless Republicans were concerned that efforts to prosecute Trump for any one of several crimes connected with material would just aggravate his followers and upset little Donnie.

Unless I’ve been asleep for the last 50 years, appeasing Trump won’t change behavior. He’s always been a liar, a jerk and thought he was above the law.  Being elected president exaggerated the behavior, especially disregard for the law. Among his many inane comments are, “Where is my Roy Cohn,“ and “Why aren’t my generals more like Hitler‘s?“

Sill Republicans in the House and Senate continue to bow to the great con man. Republicans, I hate to tell you, Trump is a real estate developer.  Trump doesn’t care one iota about you or the Republican Party. The Donald focuses only on two things: (i) stoking his ego; (ii) making more money. Every interaction is viewed by Trump as a transaction that can stoke his ego and make more money.

Republicans, you have been and continue to be mere chattel in a series of transactions. Like chattel, you will be discarded when no longer needed for the transaction.

I’ve heard people say, you can’t expect others to change if you insult them. That might be true. However, anyone who still believes what Trump says and believes he is being unfairly targeted by DOJ and the FBI, or whatever this week’s claim is, deserves to be insulted.

If you still support Trump, you are either brainwashed and/or incredibly stupid. Go look in the mirror and ask yourself, if a close relative or close friend behaved the same way as Trump, would I continue to support that person? And forget the save the sinner comment. Trump has been and will continue to be scum who has no regard for other people, for the law or for any tenets of most religions. END #459

BEGIN ENTRY #458 — The US Senate voted to approve legislation that will take a major step toward addressing CO2 emissions and climate change. The effort will help the US reduce overall GHG emissions about 40% from 2005 levels. While additional steps will be necessary to achieve a zero-emission economy by 2050, the legislation is a major step forward.

How many Republicans in the Senate voted for the legislation aimed at avoiding a climate catastrophe? Wanna guess? Start at zero and count no more.

By voting “no,” what Republican Senators are saying to their children, and especially grandchildren, “Yes, I hate you. I want you to ruin your lives and want you to die early. Now, aren’t you happy with grandpa/grandma?’

Apparently what matters to Republicans in the Senate, is not family, is not country, is not duty to uphold the constitution. What matters to Senators is allegiance to the Republican Party and its de facto leader, the Donald.

If you don’t think Republicans believe allegiance to party is more important than commitment to family and mankind, then why vote against the climate change legislation? In addition to addressing climate change, the legislation helps reduce drug prices and cuts the deficit. Republicans, what do you want in the legislation?

Obviously, Republicans don’t know what they want. To help provide some guidance, during the August recess go home and ask your kids and especially your grandkids if they would rather live in a world that’s reasonably unpleasant or a world in which there are even more droughts, floods, fires and record-setting temperatures? I suspect they’ll provide some guidance to you. Then, make an appointment with a proctologist and get yur head repositioned properly on our body. END #458

#457 Hope Springs Eternal. Well, a Little Hope Anyway.

ENTRY #457 BEGINS: Nothing like an oppressive heat wave in much of the country, record rainfall in some areas, forest fires in other areas and a well-publicized Congressional hearing with evidence overwhelmingly indicating the former president is guilty of multiple crimes to have politicians and voters pull their head out of their you-know-what.  And, if that weren’t enough, women of childbearing age are recognizing that they’ve lost a bunch of personal rights thanks to a bunch of old white guys, save one, in Washington.

Nevertheless, the saying, “hope springs eternal“ still seems true. While very early in the “hope” spring – the crocus are the only plants peeping up through the snow – the US made some progress this past week in addressing climate change.  Thanks to efforts by Chuck Schumer, Senate majority leader, the Democrats appear to have enough votes to pass a major bill addressing climate-change and some other issues.

OK, so Schumer had to line the pockets of Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia – or was that Manson? — but the bill has life.  Of course, no Republican Senator has yet to acknowledge their constituents are suffering from record heat, record drought in some areas and record rainfall.  Mitch McConnell, (R, KY) apparently forgot he represents Kentucky, which has been hit with a series of disastrous weather events.  Mitch and the other Republican senators must be very slow learners.

Maybe the prospect of passage of the legislation addressing climate change will provide some cover for Republican senators who have been insisting that climate change is not an issue.  We know that Republican of all stripes have a problem with basic science.  Remember how difficult high-school chemistry and physics were?  Besides, you can’t expect a Republican senator to have confidence in science. I mean, how can you trust Newton, Einstein, Madam Currie et al?  All of them were liberals, ya’ know.

While Republicans seem to have a hard time with basic science, some Republicans now seem to realize that their hero, Donald J Trump, is really a gangster.  Their hero made every effort to overthrow the government.  Many Republicans thought such a takeover was OK as long as a far-right Republican was in charge.

But alas, the January 6 Committee is making supporting the Donald difficult for many rational Republicans.  Gee, what would happen if a Democrat acted the same way as Trump?  Guess allowing an overthrow is not such a good idea after all.

Even some of Trump’s inner circle are beginning to change their minds.  What we the public don’t know is who among the coup plotters has talked.  We know about testimony from a number of people with direct access to Trump and or key aides, and even from some Trump family.

What comes next will be even more interesting. As the screws from various federal and state investigations begin to tighten on the coup plotters, how many more of Trump’s munchkins will come forth?  The coup plotters see that Steve Bannon has been convicted of two (2) counts of contempt of Congress and faces up to 24 months in the slammer.  Given his past behavior and behavior since the conviction, seems highly Bannon will break whatever terms for behavior are between trial and sentencing. Little Stevie could be spending even more time in the slammer.

Then there is Peter Navarro, another coup plotter. Navarro is next to go to trial for contempt of Congress.  Navarro’s case appears to be about as cut-and-dried as Bannon‘s.  Wonder if Navarro prefers an orange jumpsuit or one with black and white stripes?

Other members of the gang-that-couldn’t-shoot-straight may face more severe charges and consequences. When faced with the prospect of going to jail or protecting Trump becomes more apparent, who in the gang will squeal? My bet is Rudy Giuliani, if he’s not already done so, might be first in line.

The information from the January 6 hearing has caused some other high-profile defections from Trump.  Even Rupert Murdoch and Fox News have been avoiding Trump lately.  In what must have sent Trump into a tantrum that would make a 2-year-old proud, Fox broadcast 15-20 minutes of a speech by Mike Pence while ignoring a speech by Trump given about the same time.

How do the defections from Trump affect the midterms?  Who knows right now?  The 01/06 Committee has more hearings and more damaging evidence will be released to the public.  We know that a certain percentage of voters will support Trump forever.

But other voters are awakening from the Trump-induced coma. More voters on the right and left are beginning to realize the democracy only works when people can be aside political differences and find practical solutions to important issues.

One of those issues is the need to take serious steps immediately to address the causes of climate change.  The solutions to climate change are going to be painful but, like the sacrifices made in WWII, everyone in the population will be affected.  We are still early in the “hope spring” – remember the crocus are just peeking out of the snow – but there is hope. END ENTRY #457

#456 New 2024 Presidential Ticket: Cheney and Snoopy

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. Entry #430 was the most recent “sense check.”

BEGIN ENTRY #456: A new third-party presidential-candidate team was announced yesterday – Liz Cheney and Snoopy will be the ticket of Do-Something Party.

Liz Cheney

During the press conference announcing the ticket, the candidates stressed, if elected, they will function as co-presidents, switching between president and vice president roles on a regular basis.

When asked why the co-presidents designation, Cheney said, “We thought it best for the country if we capitalize on each other’s strengths. I know how Capitol Hill works and other operations inside the Beltway. Snoopy is an internationally recognized figure who understands philosophy and how to deal with all kinds of people.

The pair indicated their platform will be a combination of fiscal conservatism and social liberalism, citing the position of many moderate Republicans and Democrats before the extremist took over  both parties. According to Snoopy, “We think it’s time to bring the country back together. No more zero-some game stuff and viewing the other party as the enemy.“

Snoopy

Reaction to the announcement from Trump and his supporters was swift and vicious. Trump tweeted “Despite Cheney’s voting‘s record, she’s always been a RINO. And now she’s gone to the dogs.”

Democrats were more measured in their response. The head of the party noted, “An interesting and formidable team.  Liz proved her mettle in the January 6 hearings. And, well, you can’t say enough about Snoopy. A long and stellar career. We wish them the best.“

Public reaction to the announcement has been extremely positive, especially among moderates and independents. A typical reaction, “Finally, some people who can help bring us back together as a country and get something done. Maybe Cheney and Snoopy can help prevent another revolution.“

The Do-Something Party is in the process of registering in all 50 states. Based on the responses from voters so far, registration seems likely.

No announcement was made about the Do-Something Party offering separate candidates for the Federal House and Senate, or whether the party would simply support candidates from Republicans or Democrats.  More announcements to come. (Wouldn’t it be great if the announcement were true?) END ENTRY #456

#455. Keep the Codgers Away from the Capitol

10 Sunday Jul 2022

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. Entry #430 was the most recent “sense check.”

The Winner?

BEGIN ENTRY #455: (June 2024) Breaking News: presidential candidates Trump and Biden agree to 100-yard dash using their walkers. The winner will be allocated all the electoral college votes from Florida in the 11/2024 election.

In the 2024 election, the two presidential candidates, if Trump and Biden, will be the oldest in US history at the end of their term. Biden is already older than Ronald Reagan, who was nearly 78 when he left office in January 1989.

It’s time for each party to nominate someone younger. By younger, I mean at least 25 years younger. The country needs nominees who are physically in excellent condition and no worries about mental acuity.

Yes, with age comes some degree of wisdom. And with age, generally comes some humility, #45 being an exception.

But it’s time to let some youngins back in the White House (and on Capitol Hill).  There are enough “old sages“ around to help the president address difficult political, intellectual and diplomatic issues. Sages are supposed to be advisers and spiritual leaders, not presidents.

Younger blood in the WH should also help the country ramp up efforts to address climate change.  The older guys, i.e., Trump and Biden, don’t seem to understand the need to address climate change seriously.  Maybe they don’t care since they’ll be gone before 2050 when we need to get to a zero-carbon economy.

One other critical criterion for future presidential nominees – no more businesspeople. The roles of business and government are often opposite.  The economy is a good example.  In an economic downturn, businesses usually cut expenditures. In an economic downturn, the federal government should do just the opposite and increase expenditures to avoid making the downturn worse.

In addition, many business executives seem to have forgotten that, in addition to shareholders, businesses have a responsibility to employees, their local community and the public.  Government doesn’t need to be anti-business. At the same time business doesn’t need to be anti-government.

As Charles E. Wilson (aka “Engine Charlie), president of GM many years ago and Secretary of Defense under Eisenhower proclaimed, “What’s good for our country is good for General Motors and vice versa.“ Businesses today need to heed Engine Charlie’s advice and start acting responsibly toward the country and the environment.

Putting aside age, Democrats and Republicans need to nominate candidates without a lot of “baggage.” Most people who have worked and/or lived in New York are still shocked that Trump could be elected president.  Shocked not because he ran as a Republican but shocked that voters would overlook his long, well-documented public record of lying and cheating.

Biden‘s record in the Senate includes some head-slapping moments, most notably leading the hearings on the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. What was Biden thinking?

No news that the country is clearly divided. While a couple of younger presidential candidates does not guarantee the country can start to come together, for certain divisions will intensify if either Trump or Biden is nominated.

As noted periodically in this blog, I believe the 5th US Revolution, the Revenge Revolution, has started. If you need confirmation, just count the “major” mass shootings in the less than two months — Buffalo, NY; Uvalde, TX and Highland Park, IL.

In 2022 there are more firearms in the US than people. Many firearms are assault-style weapons. In the US an 18-year-old can’t buy a beer legally but can buy an AR-15, and lots of ammunition.  Ya’ can’t have a beer kid but you can kill as many people as you want.  How does that make sense?

A good first step toward getting the country on a path of possibly coming back together would be to keep the codgers out of the nation’s capital, especially those codgers considering running for president.  And that advice is from someone who could fit the “codger” category. (END ENTRY #455)

#454. SCOTUS Leads Return of the Crusades!

04 Monday Jul 2022

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. Entry #430 was the most recent “sense check.”

BEGIN ENTRY #454. The subject of this entry seems apprpriate for July 4th. While the country celebrates the declaration of independence from Britian, the religous right and SCOTUS celebrate destruction of what has made the US a becon of light for many people and countries worldwide.

In 1492 when Columbus bumped into America while looking for a passage to India, Christians were ousting Muslims and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula. The terms offered were simple — if you wanna stay on the Peninsula, you must convert to Christianity. Otherwise, you’re exiled and more likely, you’re toast.

Here we are 500+ years later and the head of the religious right, Donald Trump, appointed a kangaroo court that is leading another crusade. Just like 1492, the kangaroo court is effectively forcing beliefs of hard-right Christianity on the population. For those who don’t want to buy in, the same options exist today as in 1492 – leave or be prosecuted.

Trump’s kangaroo court, aka SCOTUS, is taking away rights from individuals – blacks and browns now have fewer voting rights; immigrants are unwelcome, unless, of course, they’re from Western countries and not Jewish or Muslim; women need to join the Amy Barrett cult and turn over control of ther bodies to men; and everyone must bow down to the great fossil-fuel industry, which, unlike the EPA, has always proved benevolent and worked diligently in the public’s best interest. Besides, killing the EPA is a good thing. Plants like all that carbon dioxide.

Just to demonstrate how thoughtful SCOTUS is toward helping everyone understand their new set of “rights,” the kangaroo court plans to affirm the law in Texas that lets vigilantes track down people who might have helped those sinful women get an abortion. We, the religious right, know what’s best for you.

What has happened to Spain since the religious right forcibly reshaped a multi-cultural society into a monolithic one? Spain has deteriorated from a great international power to an also ran. For many years, Spain has been a nice place to visit and not much else.

Will the US suffer the same fate? Unlike Republicans in Congress, the hard-right members of SCOTUS are elected for life. Now that the kangaroos have tasted political power, they will no longer be satisfied with interpreting the law. The kangaroos now can set social policy to control actions of the populace without any repercussions.

Republican justices on SCOTUS already seem to be suffering from the age-old adage, “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.“

The far right’s biggest lackey on the court, Clarence Thomas, has encouraged attorneys general of Republican-controlled state and private organizations to file lawsuits that would roll back even more rights of individuals. Take away more! Apparently, Thomas has forgotten how much he benefited from many of those rights. Nothing like a little denial and revisionist history to justify one’s actions.

Surprise, surprise. Following the recent decisions by SCOTUS, some people were upset. And how did the Republican justices react to people exercising their 1st Amendment rights? Let’s take away those rights by banning anyone from protesting in front of a justice’s residence. How dare those people protest!

Where does a SCOTUS-led religious crusade end up? Hard to tell but the intervening battles are going to be more than a few peaceful protests at the justice’s residences. SCOUS’ actions have already ratcheted up the intensity of the 5th US Revolution.

Originally, I thought the 5th US Revolution, labeled the Revenge Revolution, would be about economic inequity. Based on the actions of SCOTUS, particularly decisions the most recent term, the 5th US Revolution will be focused more on individual rights.

SCOTUS has also increased the likely intensity of the seemingly inevitable armed battle between the religious right and others, with more bloodshed than originally envisioned. Attribute this directly to SCOTUS. SCOTUS’ decision now allows virtually everyone to pack heat wherever they want and no permit is needed. In addition, why not allow virtually anyone to buy an assault rifle?

Don’t be surprised if the next term, SCOTUS takes on a case that could overturn Brown V Board of Education, thereby reinstating Plessy. And it’s only just begun. END ENTRY #454.

#453: Trump Cites Ruling at Westminster as Proof He Won in 2020

25 Saturday Jun 2022

Welcome to a discussion about the upcoming 5th Revolution in the US, which I’ve titled the “Revenge Revolution.” For more about the Revenge Revolution and the author, Entry #1.  Periodically I write a “sense check” to assess whether a revolution in the US is possible or whether the entire exercise is based on a statistical aberration — i.e., a roughly 50-year cycle between major upheavals in the US. Entry #430 was the most recent “sense check.”

BEGIN ENTRY #453: The week of June 20, 2022 was full of significant news events from inside the Beltway – decisions from SCOTUS, the US Senate finally agreeing on minimal controls for firearm purchases, and testimony at the 01/06 Select Committee hearings from Republicans about events leading up to the assault on the Capitol. One event not covered was a press conference held by Trump.

On Thursday in Mara-a-Lago, Trump, proclaimed that the results from Westminster Kennel Club proved that he won the 2020 election.  Trump argued the final ruling of the judge at Westminster should be considered much like a ruling from SCOTUS – the final word on the matter.

In a typical rambling speech, Trump claimed the winner of the Westminster Best-in-Show, a bloodhound named Trumpet, was named after him.  The former president noted how Trumpet’s characteristics that won him Best-in-Show paralleled Trump’s characteristics – regal appearance, athletic build, face a bit jowly, dedicated to working, and most of all superior to everyone else.

Trumpet

Because his alleged namesake Trumpet was #1 at Westminster, Trump stated he must have won the 2020 election. Trump’s claim of winning the 2020 election was enthusiastically supported by Trump’s lapdogs who were at Mara-a-Lago – Rudy Giuliani, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jim Jordan and a few others.

Trump stated that since he now had been vindicated by the judge at Westminster, he was going to file a lawsuit to disband the 01/06 Select Committee and have members of that group charged with conspiracy.

When asked why the courts might allow such a case to go forward, Trump replied, “If the Supreme Court can issue such decisions as overturning Roe v. Wade, and making it legal to pack heat in Times Square, surely, they’ll support me in my efforts to rightfully claim I won the 2020 election. The hard-right members of SCOTUS owe me a favor.”

Aren’t you sorry you missed hearing Trump’s remarks?  OK, this was definitely tongue-in-cheek but not far from the truth.  The decisions by SCOTUS this week and one next week that is likely to gut the power of the Environmental Protection Agency look to be an inflection point for the next phase of the 5th US Revolution.

Unfortunately, the next phase, as noted in periodic entries over the years, will be one where armed camps face off.  The battlelines will not be as clear as the Civil War and the intensity of the fighting likely will be more gradual.  But it is going to be ugly. END ENTRY #453

BEGIN ENTRY #452: Since the election of president Biden, former president Trump has continued to make wild and unsubstantiated claims about the election being stolen and that he should be reinstated. As the House Select Committee has presented more testimony by Trump’s own staff and family refuting Trump’s assertions, I was reminded of a song from the mid-1960’s.

The title seemed to capture Trump’s sustained bizarre behavior. The mid-1960’s song was titled, “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-haa.” I took the liberty of tweaking the words to reflect Trump’s likely mental state. If you’ve never heard the song before, take a listen. The lyrics were a bit jarring even for the mid-1960’s.

As far as the tweaked lyrics, don’t try and read too much into them. The original lyrics were unusual at best and I tried to maintain a substantial portion of them. So, just enjoy.

“They’re Coming to Take Me (the Donald) Away“

Remember when you took a dive, lied
And voted to oust me as #45
I begged you I can’t leave just yet
Because I’d go berserk, I fret

Well, some like you voted me out anyway
And then my days got worse and worse
And now you see I’ve gone berserk,
Completely out of my mind

And they’re coming to take me away ha-haaa
They’re coming to take me away ho ho, hee hee, ha haaa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I’ll be happy to see those nice young folks
In their pretty, clean white coats
And they’re coming to take me away ha haaa

You always thought I was a joke
And so you laughed with other folks
You laughed out loud when I said
That by losing the vote, I’d flip my lid

Right? You know you laughed
I heard you laugh. You laughed
You laughed and said, “Oh, well, too bad”
But now you know I’m utterly mad

And they’re coming to take me away ha haaa
They’re coming to take me away ho ho, hee hee, ha haaa
To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they’re coming to take me away ha haaa

I paid for your food, and all the clothes
I paid for the house, NY and Mar-a-Lago
And this is how you pay me back
For all my kind unselfish, loving deeds

Ha! Well, you just wait
MAGAts will find you yet and when they do
They’ll put you in with all the bums
You know who – that Barr, Jared, Ivanka, too

And they’re coming to take me away ha haaa
They’re coming to take me away ha haaa, ho ho, hee hee
To the funny farm where life is beautiful all the time
And I’ll be happy to see those nice young folks
In their pretty and clean lovely white coats

Relevance of #452. If you are asking yourself why is Entry #452 relevant to a discussion about a possible 5th US Revolution, then think about the implications for the country as more and more evidence is released by the House Select Committee. Whether or not you supported Trump, if the evidence indicates likely criminal behavior, the former president needs to be brought to trial. Otherwise there will be no guardrails on the behavior of any future president, Democrat or Republican. And, there will be no democracy.

#451. “Solving Climate Change Is Too Complicated. Can’t Be Done!” (Wrong)

BEGIN #451: As noted occasionally in this blog, the “real me” is a member of a group of fellow MIT Alumni working on developing, assessing, and/or recommending practical solutions to climate change. The vision is to provide guidance to government, industry and the public about actions that should result in slowing the increase in the earth’s temperature to ~2.0oC by 2100. The baseline temperature is pre-Industrial Revolution.

One of the workgroups held a Zoom call on June 6. Part of the call was devoted to reviewing a deck of PowerPoint slides that could be used to help educate the general public about causes of climate change and possible solutions.

One slide, describing the difficulty of the task, was titled “Very Difficult to Solve but Possible.” Almost immediately one member of the group strenuously objected to the word “Possible” in the title. He claimed there was really no solution to climate change, and we should not imply that there was. Several people objected, and I believe rightfully so.

Because a problem is extremely difficult to solve does not mean it cannot be solved. Apparently, he forgot we all went to MIT.

In addition, I found the objection ironic, given that the meeting was on the 78th anniversary of D-Day. What if the commanders of the Allied forces had decided that trying to retake much of Western Europe from the Axis was too difficult? That the landing at Normandy was too difficult and too dangerous? Had those efforts been deemed too difficult, what kind of world would we have today?

My father-in-law was one of those who participated in D-Day, landing at Omaha Beach, 2nd wave. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. While training in England before D-Day, he volunteered as a waist gunner on bombing runs over Germany. Thank goodness he and thousands of others who fought in WWII did not think retaking Western Europe was too difficult.

After spending the last few years trying to help address climate change, I believe that we, societal we, can solve the problem and avoid a catastrophe for mankind worldwide. The necessary effort will be as complex and difficult as the Americans and Allies found in World War II. Another layer of difficulty will be the time required. Rather than a war effort of 4-5 years, the “war on climate change” is going to last for probably 50 years, or more.

Yes, during those 50 years, there will be rationing and restrictions. There will be other inconveniences as well. To address the causes of climate change, life is not going to return to what was once considered “normal.”

Life after WWII was different than before WWII. As with post-WWII, if the climate change effort is managed properly, there will be widespread implementation of new technology and creation of many job opportunities.

Getting there is not going to be easy. As a nation we need to put on our big-boy pants, quit whining that the solution is too difficult, and start acting like adults. Everyone is society is going to be affected by climate change and everyone needs to commit to a solution.

We need to begin thinking about addressing climate change in much the same way the US and the Allies viewed D-Day. There’s really not much choice. It’s a “do” or “die” situation. END #451
